16 Feb 2015. Prof. Dr. Sangita Bhandary has been reinstated as the vice-chancellor of Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) as per the direction of division bench of Justices Gopal Parajuli and Cholendra Shumsher Rana of the Supreme Court on 15 Feb. Dr. Bhandary was appointed as vice-chancellor on 23 Aug 2012 by the then prime minister Dr. Baburam Bhattrai as a chancellor of the academy after the termination of the 4 year term of the founding vice-chancellor Dr. Arjun Karki. But she was dismissed from the position on January 24, 2013 after five months of the appointment following the report from the three-member probe committee formed by Dr. Bhattrai against the votes of two-third of the members of the Senate to relieve her regarding their dissatisfaction of rector appointment.  The probe committee was headed by  National Planning Commission member Dr. Shiva Kumar Rai, Health and Population Ministry Secretary Dr. Praveen Mishra and Education Ministry Secretary Suresh Man Shrestha. The government, then, had appointed Dr. Jay Narayan Shah as vice-chancellor on 11 Feb 2013 which is auto-terminated after the reinstatement of Dr. Bhandary. She rejoined the office from 16 Feb 2015.

8th PAHS Day observed

06 Feb 2015. Patan Academy of Heath Sciences this year observed its eighth anniversary as PAHS day on 23 Magh 2071 as the day when the cabinet of the Government of Nepal endorsed establishment of PAHS in principle with Patan Hospital as its teaching hospital. The function took place in PAHS Premises amid the PAHS family including executives, faculties, staffs and students from PAHS and Patan Hospital. The ceremony was chaired by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Jay N Shah. The winners of the annual sports events held from 19-24 June 2014 were given away prizes by the executives. Beside two of the staffs Prof. Dr. Chandra Prasad Maskey (Chair, Service Commission) and Dr. Bimala Malla (Chair of Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics) who got their retirement in the year were acknowledged by the Vice Chancellor for their dedicated service to Patan Hospital and the academy. Similarly PAHS family also mourned for the deceased Late Mr. Tashi Dondup (Laboratory Department). There was an open mic session after the formal program in which staffs and students performed various songs, poems, jokes, etc. The program was followed by lunch program.

9 Jan 2015, A three-day orientation to the 5th intake of students under school of medicine was concluded with commencement of the sixty incoming students into MBBS program held on the “White Coat Ceremony”. The program chaired by Prof. Dr. Jay N Shah, vice-chancellor of the academy was graced by chief secretary of the government of Nepal – Mr. Leelamani Paudel as the chief guest of the ceremony along with other national and international dignitaries. Among others distinguished guests included  Chief Hospital Administrator of Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) – Dr. Guna Raj Lohani;  former vice-chancellor of Tribhuwan university – Prof. Kedar Bhakta Mathema and senate member and proprietor of Bhatbhateni supermarket- Mr. Min Bahadur Gurung. During the ceremony the students gowned  in white apron also recited the PAHS student oath after the dean- Prof. Dr. Shrijana Shrestha.

25 Nov 2014,  A two-day “5th Core Faculty Development and Workshop” was held on 24th and 25th November 2014. The workshop was organised by the Faculty Development Committee (FDC), PAHS. There was an active participation of sixteen faculty members of PAHS in the workshop.

29 Sept 2014, PAHS students celebrated the “World Heart Day” by organising an awareness program outside the OPD department of the hospital. The program was held in the initiation of the cardiologist and PAHS faculty Dr Krishna Shrestha. The program was observed by hundreds of patients and visitors. In the program, Nursing director Sis. Narayani Rai and Dr. Shrestha spoke about the importance of heart health. Students made presentations with various art-works.

The formal program was followed by free health camp was organised with a joint effort of the final year students and the nursing department in which a number of patients checked their blood pressure. As per the organisers, the record of the health camp was used for research purpose.

field hospital14 Aug 2014, History of Disaster Management Plan in Patan Hospital is 20 years old. To continue the legacy, the plan has been revised 10th time in  2014. The additional areas covered in this revision are, “Evacuation Plan”, “Surge Capacity” and “Early Deployment Plan” and was presented on 20 June 2014. As a part of this, a simulation on setting up field hospital was done at a open space in front of Nick Simon Building. The purpose was to set up treatment area in case of evacuation of the hospital as a part of Disaster Management Plan. PAHS is taking this initiative in collaboration with WHO and Nepal Army.

13 June 2014, As a part of infotainment and creating awareness among the medical students, screening of documentary “From Fear to Freedom:Ending violence against women” was done in the PAHS auditorium in which substantial number of medical students from all the four batches took active participation. The screening of the movie was then followed by the “Wall of Hope”  program in which the students spoke out to end violence against women. As a part of the program the students also imprinted their colorful hands hands on a white board which has been mounted on the wall of tele-medicine block at the hospital premise. The art work has been a part of attraction along with awareness among visitors.

 

World Red Cross day observed

8 May 2014. PAHS Student Society organised blood donation campaign to mark the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. On the occasion 195 generous people donated their blood on Thursday. Among the donors were students and faculties of PAHS including the Patan Hospital staffs. Also some of the visitors voluntarily turned up to donate their blood after knowing about the program.

PAHS qualifies for semi-final in Rudip memorial inter-medical college cricket tournament

​17 April 2014.PAHS ​cricket team has qualified itself for the semifinal in the fourth Rudip Memorial Inter-medical Colleges Cricket tournament being held at the Army residential school Cricket Ground in Bhaktapur.

PAHS ​has already won its first ​two ​preliminarymatch​es, played against Nepalese Army Institute of Health Sciences  (NAIHS) ​ and ​​KIST medical college on 3rd and 5th of Baisakh, of the tournament. PAHS beat NAIHS by four wickets  in the first match​. NAIHS ​faced run out in 16 overs making 69 runs whereas PAHS achieved its target of 70 runs in 15 overs by courtesy of  Ashok Yadav and Rishav Sharma as they bagged 3 wickets each for PAHS. The all rounder Ashok Yadav with the contribution of 28 runs for PAHS was declared man of the match. Whereas in the ​second match ​played against KIST Medical College, PAHS won by 53 runs​ scoring 158 runs in 20 overs. For the total Bibek K.C scored 37 runs, Nahakul Shahi 35 runs. Rishav Sharma scored not out 33 runs in 22 balls. To restrict KIST medical college for 105 runs Ashok Yadav took 4 wickets and was decided man of the match for consecutive 2 matches. For KIST Sunil Kunwar scored highest 30 runs. With this victory PAHS has qualified itself for the semifinal scheduled on 11 Baisakh.

28 March 2014. PAHS received a kind donation of latest ultrasonography machine from the Chinese giant of medical equipments-Shenzhen Mindray Bio-Medical Electronics Co. Ltd.The handover program was held in the PAHS auditorium amidst the presence of representatives of the company and the PAHS family. PAHS was honored by the ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Nepal His Excellency Mr. Wu Chuntai as the chief guest.

Mr. Horace Wang, General Manager, South Asiahanded over the machine to the Hospital Director Prof. Dr.Paban Kumar Sharma. Rector Dr. Kedar Prasad Baral in his welcome address highlighted the mission of PAHS especially to serve the rural poor andimprove the overall health systemof Nepal. Dr. DB Karki, Head of Department of the radiology department stated thatthe addition ofequipment will help the service delivery of Patan Hospital. Vice chancellor Prof. Dr. Jay N Shah presented the letter of appreciation to the company with vote of thanks on behalf of the PAHS family.

Changes in Leadership

Dr. Shrijana Shrestha has been appointed as Dean of School of Medicine of Patan Academy of Health Sciences replacing Dr Rajesh Nath Gongal effective from 31 December 2013. Dr Gongal has been the founder Dean and has successfully completed his term of four Years with yearly intake of students in MBBS from the year 2010 and running the school since.

Dr Shrijana took the oath of the position from the registrar of Patan Academy of Health Sciences Mr Krishna Bahadur Bhandari in presence of members of Executive Council. Formerly she was the Chair of Department of Paediatrics.
Similarly, Dr Imran Ansari has replaced Dr Shrestha as the Chair of Department of Paediatrics. Both the doctors has been senior members of PAHS. We congratulate the both for securing their new positions and wish them all the best for successful tenure as the new leaders of PAHS to take the institution to greater height.

Mr Krishna Bahadur Bhandari has been re-appointed as registrar of Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) for a four-year term effective from 21 October 2013.  The appointment was approved of by the Minister of Health and Population, His Excellency Dr Vidhyadhar Mallik in the capacity of  Pro-chancellor of the academy on the recommendation of the vice-chancellor Prof Dr Jay N shah.

‘Guru Purnima’ observed in PAHS

The Full-moon day of the month of Asadh is celebrated as ‘Guru Purnima’ in memory of the great ancient saint Vyas who edited the four Vedas, wrote 18 Puranas, the longest Hindu epic Mahabharata and the Seimad Bhagwata. Also the festival is celebrated by Buddhists in honour of the lord Buddha who gave His first sermon on this day. Thus it has a great significance in both the Hindu and Buddhist religions.

To carry out the tradition, PAHS observed ‘Guru Purnima’ on 22 July organized by the PAHS Student Society in presence of PAHS Family amid a function held in the auditorium. The students marked the day by putting tikas and khadas to the spiritual and academic teachers with the expression of gratitude towards them. In the program, the executives also remembered their gurus and pointed out the value of gurus in a person’s life with thoughtfulness that beside academic teachers especially the patients, the community and the people around are also equally important teachers in context of medical students. And with this great ethos, PAHS is very proud that the students are going to turn out to be great doctors who are not only technically competent but also socially responsible.

‘Bhat-Bhateni Collaborative Scholarship – 2012’ Program

Mr Min Bahadur Gurung and Mrs Sabitri Gurung, the social workers and owners of Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket handed over collaborative scholarship for the year 2012 amidst a program held in the presence of renowned personalities from various sectors on 19 July. In the kind of scholarship, two-third of the cost is born by the sponsor whereas the rest one-third is contributed by the academy. The scholarship for the year has been provided to two students Mr Basanta Raj Joshi from Baitadi and Ms Melina Hamal from Dolpa for six-year long MBBS program.

The Gurung couple has been providing two scholarships each year for remote districts of Nepal from the very first year of the PAHS MBBS program. Dhanamaya Gharti Magar from Rolpa and Shailesh Shrestha from Khotang, the home district of Mr Gurung were the first recipients of the award in 2010. Similarly Dabal Bahadur Malla and Tai Anjuk Lama were able to grab the scholarships from Mugu and Humala districts respectively in the year 2011.

Mr Gurung says that they have initiated the sponsorships as a part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of the Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket. Gurungs own a chain of supermarkets in the country by the name of Bhat-Bhateni with five within the Kathmandu valley and one in Pokhara.

Beside the scholarship, he has made a great contribution to other sectors as well and has been a role model to the private sectors for the socio-economic transformation of the country. PAHS welcomes the generous people/organizations from around the world to join hands with PAHS like the Gurung couple to overcome its ambitious mission to produce technically competent and socially responsible health professionals who are dedicated to serve especially the rural-poor of Nepal making sustained improvement in health indices of the country.

Patan Hospital receives Medical Equipments from the Government

Patan Hospital the tertiary care teaching hospital of the Patan Academy of Healthciences (PAHS) is thankful to receive medical equipments from the Department of Health Services (DoHS), Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP). The donated equipments included the latest Chromo Endoscopy machine (FICE Fuzinon) and Electroencephalography (EEG, RMS India).

The EEG machine  will be useful in the diagnosis of epilepsy etc. whereas the next generation FICE, high end endoscopy claims to assist in dramatically enhancing accurate diagnosis of minute lesions. The add-ons of these new equipments in the hospital will add value to the service we have been providing.

 

PAHS Approach to be a part of relief Process for the flood victims of far-western Nepal

5 July 2013. To add-on to relief fund for the victims who were badly affected from the devastating flood and landslide in the far-western region of Nepal during last months, PAHS Students Society (PAHSSS) initiated a fundraising campaign cum clothes collection program. The PAHS and the Patan Hospital family whole-heartedly supported the generous purpose by giving away the best they could. This made possible to collect the fund of total sum of NRs 113078.00 and a substantial amount of blankets and reusable clothes. The clothes were made sure of reusability by being washed in the hospital laundry after being sorted. So thank goes to all the contributors.

The valuable collection was handed over to the media personnel Ms Devaki Bista amidst a program held in the PAHS auditorium in the presence of executives, doctors, nurses, academicians, staffs and students. Ms Bista is also the treasurer of the far-western Kathmandu journalist society and has been actively involved in the relief program.

Thus, PAHS is proud to announce it as the 3rd Anniversary of its true entry into core academic activity introducing its first student-intake into the introductory block of MBBS curriculum. So it has been a special as well as an emotional moment to PAHS itself and moreover to the first batch of MBBS students i.e., Batch I of year 2010 intake. To mark this, the first batch organised a short but yet a very nice program from their personal level in Lecture Hall at the Basic Science Department. The program was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Jay n Shah with the Rector Prof. Dr. Kedar Prasad Baral and the Hospital Director of Patan Hospital Prof. Dr. Paban Kumar Sharma under emceeing of Ms Reecha Baniya, a student of the batch. Short speeches were delivered by each of the dignitaries to the audience-ship of the batch and the students made in more sweet by a surprise cake-cutting ceremony from the hands of VC. So in overall the program was very memorable. But it would not have been possible for the celebration without goodwishes of all our well-wishers and passion and hard work of PAHS family itself. So thanks goes to all and we hope similar support in future henceforth to overcome the visionary mission of PAHS in making positive changes in the National Health Index. Also we wish congratulations to our student for the successful completion of the years in PAHS and wish them all the best in being a role model among Healthcare professionals of Nepal.

Books Display at PAHS

May 5, 2013. A “Book Display” was held at the Basic Science Library of PAHS . The major objecctive of the display is to notify the in house faculty and students about the add on in the section and acknowledgement of the kind donation received  a from the British Medical Association (BMA )Information Fund 2012. A total of 152 medical books and 15 CDs worth Sterling Pounds 1876.53 were received from the BMA.In addition to this the Display also included books received from Steinman, Einstein medical college, USA and  Prof. Jahn Nesland and also from our valued volunteers  Dr. Darren Nichols, Dr. Ted McKinney. It was organized as a regular activity of library to keep users informed of the new add-on  to the resources and was overwhelmingly visited by faculty members and students of PAHS.

Health Minister visits PAHS

19 April 2013. Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) has been honored by visit paid by the pro-chancellor Honorable Minister of Health and Population Mr. Vidyadhar Mallik and his team. He was warmly welcomed by the executives and staffs of the Academy. During the visit he had a brief tour to the Emergency ward, record section, opd’s, dental department, radiology and inpatients surgery wards various other departments of the hospital including newly constructed Influenza  Lab and the school of medicine class rooms in basic science section.  The tour included under construction retrofitted extension of pediatric/orthopedic building. After tour of the hospital and academy,Hon’ble minister with Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Jay N Shah and PAHS executives had extensive interaction in VC’s office about mission, vision and goal of PAHS. Functioning of patan hospital and school of medicine as well as further plan of starting school of public health, school of nursing, etc. were discussed together with continuation of ministry of health/ Government of Nepal’s various programs in health sector including trainings and services to the society and nation.   Hon’ble minister with his team stated to further strengthen and support PAHS/patan hospital to continue to provide quality hospital services and training-academic programs to better serve the marginalized/disadvantaged population and achieve the visionary mission of the academy.

01 April 2013. The inaugural function of the long awaited MDL (molecular diagnositc lab, Influenza project) was graced by  the chief guest Secretary of Ministry of Health and Population Prof Dr Praveen Kumar Mishra amidst the presence of  special guest Dr Mingmar Gyalzen Sherpa, Director General of Department of Health Services together with dignitaries   Dr Gita Shakya, Director of National Public Health Library, Karen Siener, the CDC representative and representatives from WHO. The Ceremony was held at the auditorium of PAHS. The Principle Investigator of the influenza project highlighted the importance of the lab. Dr. Sherpa suggested on the maintenance and effective usage of lab. Karen explained with the expectation from lab. VC thanked all the parties who have been helpful for the establishment expecting further support in future as well.After the address of the dignitaries and PAHS executives the formal inauguration of the LAB was done by the Secretary by cutting ribbon. He was further explained about the lab by Dr. Purusottam Prasai, the virologist who is also the in charge of the lab. The molecular diagnostic lab has acquired PCR machine with the help of CDC/influenza project in order to strengthen existing lab facility at PAHS. The state of the art PCR machine (2nd in establishment in the country) will broaden the ‘molecular diagnosis’ of various other diseases seen in day to day clinical practice.

The winners of the annual sports events held on 3,5  and 6 of April were given away the prizes by the executives. Beside six of the staffs who got their retirement and deceased within the year were acknowledged by the Vice Chancellor for their long period of dedicated service to Patan Hospital and the academy. Those who were honored were Ms. Nani Beti Bajracharya (Nursing Department), Ms. Saraswati K.C. (Nursing Department), Mr. Ram Babu Shrestha (Pathology Department),Mr. Govind Gurung (Adminsitrative Department),  Mr. hari Bahadur Rai (Out Patient Department) and Mr. Ram Prasad Prajapati. Also the whole PAHS family mourned for the deceased Late Ms. Manju Pandey and Mr. Deepak Thapa from Nursing and Outpatient Department respectively.

Prof Dr Kedar Prasad Baral new Rector of PAHS

11 March 2013. Prof Dr Kedar Prasad Baral has been appoineted as the new rector of the Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) by the Honorable Minister of Health and Population (MoHP) at the capacity of the Pro-Chancellor of the academy on the recommendation of Prof Dr Jay N Shah, the Vice Chancellor of PAHS. The position was vacant after Prof Dr Soumya Bhattachharya resigned  from the position.

Prof Baral is the Head of Department of the Community Health Sciences (CHS) Department which has been another strength of the PAHS curriculum to overcome its ambitious mission. Apart from this he is also the chief of the Influenza Pandemic Preparedness and Response Project (IPPRP), a research collaboration of the academy with the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, USA to support Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) for the implementation of a National Avian Influenza and Influenza Pandemic Preparedness and Response Plan through developing selected
referral service centers for virological and epidemiological surveillance. We wish him for successful tenure of his new responsibility.

The in house Sr. surgeon Prof. Dr. Jay Narayan Shah of the Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) has been appointed as new Vice Chancellor of the academy by the Rt. Honorable Prime minister Dr. Baburam Bhattrai as the Chancellor of the academy. Dr. Shah is nominated by the three member committee formed by the chancellor to submit the prospective candidates for the position. The committee was led by Health Minister Rajendra Mahato, the Pro-chancellor with two other senate member sof the academy -Secretary at the Education Ministry, Som Lal Subedi, and Chairman of the Nepal Medical Council, Dr Damodar Gajurel.

After completing six years of medical school from shanghai second medical university (now school of medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University http://www.shsmu.edu.cn/) in 1988 and then masters in surgery/hepatobiliary from same university. Dr Shah has been with the Patan Academy opf Health Sciences and Patan Hospital for more than 19 years. Termination of Prof Dr Sangeeta Bhandary from the position of VC of PAHS

24 Jan 2013. Prof. Dr. Sangeeta Bhandary from the position of Vice Chancellor of PAHS by the Chancellor of the Academy Rt. Honorable Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattrai  after the emergency senate held on date 11 Magh 2069 which also unveiled the report from the three-member probe committee formed by the chancellor under the chairmanship of the National Planning Commission (NPC) Dr Shib Kumar Rai which included the Health Secretary Dr. Praveen Mishra and Education Secretary Mr Suresh Man Shrestha. The probe committee was formed after seven of the senate members lodged complain against Dr Bhandary for being ineligible for the position and henceforth according to the PAHS Act, Dr Bhandary has been suspended from the position.

Also a new search committee has been formed by the Rt Honbl’e PM as the Chancellor for the recommendation for the position of Vice Chancellor which has fallen vacant after suspension of Dr Bhandary. The committee has Dr Shib Kumar Rai, member of National Planning  Commission and Mr Som Lal Subedi, Education Secretary under the chairmanship of Honb’le Minister of Health and Population Mr. Rajendra Mahato, Pro-chancellor of the Academy.

My Heart, My Art 2012

Since the inception of the medical education Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) has been supporting its students’ artistic endeavors by hosting an art competition. The competition was held for second year among the students during cardiac block in the first year of their basic sciences curriculum. They were asked to artistically conceptualize what they learnt about the heart and circulatory system.

The competition was an idea of Dr Carol Ann Courneya, an international faculty at PAHS who has been coordinating the cardiac block at PAHS.  “We want our students to have a holistic education with a combination of arts, humanities, and sciences. This will give them a better understanding of the human condition and make them well prepared to become innovative health care leaders in rural Nepal one day,” says Dr Courneya.

The popular competition was named as “Mero Mutu, Mero Kala” (my heart my art) by Achyut Koirala from the first batch which was one of the categories last year.

This year the competition saw a surge in submissions with 30 pieces of art, two music videos, and an animation film. A panel of 10 judges chose the top three pieces and the top logo which were put on display at the college grounds on 11 October. The winners were given away prizes which included stethoscopes and PAHS mugs. Dr Carol Ann Courneya was one of the judges in the contest.

In the contest, Kamal Sagar Thokar won the 1st prize for a charcoal sketch of heart whereas the second and third prizes were grabbed by Seema Bhandari for a 3D presentation and Jeetendra Bhandari and Sajan Acharya for a music video respectively. Also the honorary prizes were given away to the three students Alok Chandra Mahato for poster painting, Tapendra Koirala for heart animation and Carmina Shrestha for 3D presentation “You reap what you sow”. This year there was an additional title for logo in the competition which was bagged by Carmina Shrestha.

Appointment of Dr Saumaya Bhattacharya as New Rector at PAHS

Dr Soumya Bhattacharya has been appointed as the rector of Patan Academy of Health Sciences. Formerly she was the  Member Professor and Head, Department of Anatomy at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan. The rector position was vacant in the academy since the founding rector Dr Neelam Adhikari resigned from the post. We extend warm welcome to her on behalf of the PAHS family and wish her all the best for successful tenure to take the academy to greater heights to overcome its mission, vision, goal and objectives.

Fourth PAHS Senate Meeting 2069 (2012)

The fourth Senate Meeting of the Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) was held on 8 October 2012 (22 Ashwin 2069). The  meeting was chaired by the Pro-Chancellor Honorable Minister of Health and Population Rajendra Mahato with the participation of senate members of the academy. Chancellor of the academy the Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai who was supposed to chair the meeting could not attend it due to health reason. Representation from National Advisory Board and consultants of PAHS was there in the meeting. The registrar Mr KB Bhandari as the secretary of the senate updated the senate on different agendas including previous year’s  outcomes and proposed plans for the forthcoming years. (Read more…)

PAHS received books from Dr. Pragya Mishra

19 July 2012, PAHS received kind donation from Dr. Pragya Mishra from Indiana University, USA through Her father Mr. Narayan Mishra. Total of 55 books were received in donation. The books worth US $ 2800 in total. We are very thankful to Dr. Mishra for this valuable donation.

PAHS held Admission OSCE for MBBS intake 2012

PAHS went through its final student selection process for the third batch of its medical school. An  Admission Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) was held from 13-15 July 2012 (29-37 Asadh 2069) to select students who demonstrates the highest aptitude for training and compassion to serve Nepal as per the PAHS mission. All the students who passed the written examination were eligible for the sit in the Admission OSCE.

Farewell to our Volunteer Faculty William A. Pastor

PAHS received kind donation from the “Wake up!” group

PAHS received shipment of 400 Medical Textbooks worth AUD 54789.00 kindly donated by the ‘Wake up! Global Health Group”. It is a group of medical students from the University of Newcastle, Australia, who saw value in the work done by PAHS and heeded their call for more library resources. These books have been supplied by McGraw-Hill Education, Australia for free of charge. Thus PAHS extends its gratitude towards both the institutions for their valuable support.

MoU signed between PAHS and BPKIHS

A Memorandum of Understanding between PAHS and B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) was signed . Under this agreement BPKIHS will provide four seats for PAHS sponsored candidates in four different programs of  Basic Medical Sciences. The programs includes:

  • Human Anatomy
  • Biochemistry
  • Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics
  • Basic and Clinical Physiology

Dr. Paras Has been appointed as a Vice Chancellor for Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (KAHS) which is going to be founded in Karnali one of the most remote district in the far western region. KAHS shares the vision of PAHS to narrow the disparity between rural and urban health divide with the objective to improve the health indices of the country through effective health care delivery in the rural part of Nepal.

2nd Continuing Medical Education (CME) on Clinical Rheumatology

On 23rd May 2012, PAHS hosted a CME on Clinical Rheumatology course with our endocrinologist Dr Buddhi Paudyal and visiting rheumatologist Dr Stephen Aaron from University of Alberta, Canada at PAHS Auditorium. The prime aim of the course was to increase knowledge, awareness and interest on rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases among the physicians. Rheumatic disease is seen to affect 15-20% of the total world population.

 

MBBS Entrance Exam (2012) held

Entrance examination for the third batch of PAHS MBBS Graduates was held on 28 April 2012, Saturday. Students took exam from three centers _ Kathmandu, Biratnagar and Nepalgung. The purpose of allocating three centres is to facilitate the students from the east and western part of the country to attend the entrance at possibly nearby location. However if they pass the written exam, they have  to come to the Kathmandu center to appear in the further screening process.

 

 PAHS Observed WHO Day

PAHS organized a program on 7th April to mark the World Health Day, 2012 with a slogan “Ageing and Health: Good health adds life to years”. As a part of it, students paid a visit to an elderly home to share insights and feelings of the elderly on 6thApril 2012 where students distributed small gifts to the senior citizens.

As a continuation of the program students performed a rally around the historic city of Patan as a part of awareness campaign on the 7th April which in turn took shape of a formal talk program held at the PAHS auditorium. The Chief Guest of the program was Dr. Pravin Mishra, secretary of MoHP. Also Dr. Lin Aung, WHO country Representative for Nepal and Dr. Martin were among other special guests
Also senior  journalist cum environmental activist Bhairab Risal, 84 and his better-half Sushila Risal,  70 pledged to donate their bodies to PAHS after their death amid the program. It was first of such formal donation in the country. Till date dead bodies are used to be imported. PAHS provided  certificate. The Risal duo expressed their happiness that their bodies which would be destroyed after death could be used as learning material by the aspiring medical students in treatment of the patients  and save their lives. Through the program the duo also ap pealed the government to legalize such donations so that it could bring down the dependency of the teaching hospitals in the supply of dead bodies for the study purpose.

As a regular part of PAHS calendar the annual sports week this year was held from 19th to 24th of February. This was the second sports week that PAHS celebrated with an active participation of students, faculties and staff. There was a formation of sports committee which successfully organized various events of games and sports including marathon, football, cricket, volleyball, basketball, table-tennis, badminton and track and field games. The events were held without interfering daily activities of the institution. The participants were divided into four groups – A, B, C and D and events were subsequently held at places. Most of the events were held at the Laboratory School, Kirtipur whereas the event of table-tennis and badminton were held at PAHS premises and Tribhuwan University, Kirtipur. The group which was able to collect the maximum points on the basis of the medal they won is awarded the Running shield which this year was bagged by Group XXX. The prize distribution ceremony for the program was held on 11th March 2012 at the PAHS auditorium. The winners were given away prize by the PAHS executives during the ceremony.

Fifth anniversary of Patan Academy of Heath Sciences was celebrated as PAHS day on 23 Magh 2069 (06 February 2012), the day when the cabinet of the Government of Nepal endorsed the establishment of PAHS in principle. The function took place in PAHS Premises amid the PAHS family including staffs and executives from PAHS and Patan Hospital, and the students. It was chaired by Dr. Arjun Karki, the founder Vice Chancellor of PAHS. There was also presence of other PAHS executives including the chairperson of Service Commission Dr. CP Maskey, registrar Mr. KB Bhandari, the Dean of School of Medicine Dr Rajesh Gongal, Patan Hospital Director Dr. Paras Kumar Acharya, Medical Director of Patan Hospital Dr. Pawan Kumar Sharma and Special Guest Prof. Colin MacDougall from Flinders University, Australia. Various cultural performances by the students and staffs were major attraction of the day which was followed by a lunch program.

Asian Consortium Meeting

PAHS hosted the Asian Consortium Meeting of three Asian Medical Schools from Lao, Nepal and Zamboaga to learn from each other, help each other and develop research tools to evaluate the program and advocate for social accountability. The three of the member Asian universities are the Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS), Nepal; the Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine (ADZU-SOM), Philippines and the University of Health Sciences (Lao UHS), Laos. The vision of this consortium is to build partnership among Asian Academic Institutions to improve capacity of each member institution to address the health care needs of rural or underserved population within their region and thereby provide quality and locally appropriate health care services to all. The meeting was facilitated by University of Calgary and it is expected that the partnership would help to improve local medical/health Human Resource development.

First Consultative Meeting on “Strategic Planning for School of Public Health (SoPH) and Master of Public Health (MPH) program”

PAHS hosted its first consultative meeting on “Strategic Planning for School of Public Health (SoPH) and Master of Public Health (MPH) program” from 29th Jan to 8th February 2012. The inaugural ceremony was held in the PAHS auditorium under the chairmanship of Professor Dr. Arjun Karki, the founding Vice-Chancellor of PAHS. The event was formally inaugurated by the chief guest Professor Shiva Kumar Rai, Hon’ble member of the National Planning Commission.   The occasion was also graced by other distinguished dignitaries including Dr. Prabin Kumar Mishra, secretary of the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP); Dr. Lin Aung, WHO Country Representative for Nepal; Mr. Kul Chandra Gautam, development professional, public policy expert, and human rights activist; Professor Sharad Raj Onta, Head of Department of Community Medicine and Public Health, Institute of Medicine (IOM), Tribhuwan University. It was followed by a weeklong residential technical session  at hotel Chautari, Nagarkot with an active participation of prominent public health experts from different institutions at national and international level.
