Public Engagement Assistant

Oxford University Clinical Research Unit-Nepal is hosted by Patan Hospital and the Patan Academy of Health Sciences in Kathmandu Nepal is looking for Public Engagement Assistant.

 

Key responsibilities and tasks:            

  1. To assist in providing creative inputs into the design of public engagement projects
  2. To assist in running workshops and discussions with communities
  3. To assist in drafting contracts with government organizations and partners
  4. To encourage engagement between researchers and research communities and the public.
  5. To assist in liaising with scientists for input into projects
  6. Travelling to help set up and implement PE projects
  7. Translating and proof reading documents
  8. Helping draft project reports and budgets
  9. Input into the OUCRU website and other publications
  10. Helping the OUCRU team on Training activities as needed
  11. Design media packages to provide  health information such as booklets, brochures, posters, TV program, radio e.g. to approach community
  12. Other tasks as required.

Location: Based at the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU-NP) hosted by Patan Hospital and the Patan Academy of Health Sciences in Kathmandu, Nepal

 

Length of Contract: Initial 6 months, with likely extension at the end.

Background:

 

OUCRU-NP, founded in 2003, is based in Patan Hospital, Patan Academy of Health Sciences, with the main research focus on the most common infectious disease affecting patients who present to Patan Hospital and the surrounding areas of Lalitpur, with a major focus on enteric fever (Typhoid and Paratyphoid) and other causes of febrile illness including typhus, infections of the central nervous system and Hepatitis E.

 

In collaboration with the Department of Paediatrics, University of Oxford and Oxford University Clinical Research Unit-Vietnam, OUCRU-NP is conducting a research study to understand the burden of Enteric Fever in Asia and Africa. OUCRU-NP invites applications from interested and eligible candidates for the position of Project Officer.

 

Responsibilities:

The main responsibility of this position is to support the in all activities related to ensuring quality conduct of the project in the study site, Lalitpur Submetropolitan City.

 

Key duties:

  • Assist in training and certification of field staff.
  • Continue support for the ongoing research activities.
  • Visit and support fieldwork.
  • Support in establishing procedures for identifying problems and inconsistencies in field center quality control and resolving the problems.
  • Ensure adherence to protocol by the field staff through effective coordination with the Program Manager.
  • Ensure data accuracy and consistency at entry and identify problems at various points including the questionnaires, entry methods, interview, and software.
  • Assist to maintain effective communication throughout the research activities.
  • Assist maintain a liaison between study clinics and the study cohort population ensuring all data is captured efficiently.
  • Other additional duties as the research project evolves.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

 

  • Bachelors in Public Health, Health Sciences, Population Studies or relevant discipline
  • At least 2 years experience working in health research projects preferably involving data collection from large populations.
  • Knowledge and experience in research/ project management.
  • Proven ability to work with a diverse environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills in Nepali and English
  • Strong computer literacy. Data management/ data analysis skills preferred.

Job Description: The candidate will be responsible for leading a group of enumerators in the upcoming surveillance study. The post holder will be responsible for mobilize and supervise the field visits, guide and organize the enumerators and schedule field visits. S/he will be responsible for providing technical support to the team on public engagement activities, facilitate events and provide strategic inputs on conducting such events. Job Description for the position of Medical Officer in Oxford University Clinical Research Unit-Nepal (OUCRU-NP), Patan Hospital

  • Patient Care: The primary task of a research medical officer is to provide care to patients presenting to our study clinics and wards. This involves taking history and carrying out physical examination, making a diagnosis and managing patients. Most commonly we see patients with common conditions like viral fevers, enteric fever, respiratory infections, etc.
  • Communication: Communicate with patients/study participants about the research studies, about the treatment, medicines, follow up and disease process.  Take informed consent when necessary.
  • Data Collection: Collect data from patients/study participants/other sources in study forms. Patients may be in the wards or outpatient departments.
  • Laboratory Work: Be willing and interested to participate/assist in work in the laboratory doing various procedures like microbial cultures, staining, DNA extraction, etc.
  • Research Specific Work: When necessary carry out common tasks related to research like sample collection, inventory maintenance, data entry and verification
  • Academic Work: Be willing to study vast amounts of medical/scientific literature, understand study methods and design, hone research skills, undertake written work, make presentations, etc.
  • Team Work: Be willing to work in a team of research assistants, nurses, laboratory staff, scientists, clinicians, and administrative staff. Be respectful and supportive of all teams members.
  • General Skills: Be curious to learn new information and skills, read and study, be disciplined to the goals of the organization and be a good member of the team.

Selection Criteria Essential

  • M.B. B.S. from a recognized University (or equivalent)
  • At least one (1) year experience as a medical officer.

Community Medical Auxiliary (CMA): Level 3 Minimum Qualification: CMA from recognized institution Can drive motorcycle and possess driving license. Other Requirement: Basic Computer skills Good Oral and written communication skills Experience:  Minimum of 2 years experience in healthcare setting Job Description: Physician Assistance: The primary task of the CMA is to assist the doctors who work in the study clinics in patient care and management. Communication: Communicate with patients/study participants about the research studies, about the treatment, medicines, follow up and disease process.  Take informed consent when necessary. Data Collection:Help to collect data from patients/study participants/other sources in provided forms. Data Entry: Carry out data entry into computerized study databases. Sample Collection: Collect samples from patients, e.g. blood or other body fluids and maintain their inventory while storing them. Transport samples to and from other laboratories or hospitals when necessary. Fieldwork: Be prepared to carry out fieldwork. This involves going to a site outside the hospital and may be carried out for the purposes of patient care, data collection or sample collection. Documentation: Maintain essential study documents. Be willing to assist in research related administrative tasks. Laboratory Assistance: Be willing and interested to participate/assist in work in the laboratory. Be able to carry out simple procedures such as blood drawing. General Skills: Be curious to learn new information and skills, be disciplined to the goals of the organization and be a good member of the team. Number required: 1
